Ordinary dry compressed air is filtered and passed through a beam of technologically advanced hollow membrane fibers, and nitrogen is separated from the intake by selective osmosis. Water vapor and oxygen quickly and safely permeate the atmosphere, while nitrogen is pumped under pressure into the distribution system. Pressure, flow rate and membrane size/number are the main variables affecting nitrogen production. Nitrogen purity (oxygen content) is controlled by controlling the outlet of the membrane bundle. At a given pressure and membrane size, increasing the nitrogen flow allows more oxygen to remain in the flow, reducing the purity of nitrogen. Conversely, reducing the flow of nitrogen increases purity. For a particular purity, higher air pressure brings higher nitrogen flow rates to the membrane. Below the purity range of 90% to 99.9% is possible.
