how to submit press release to local newspaper (3rd Jan 23 at 10:22am UTC)Quote Reply

Introduction

If you're involved in a community organization, chances are that some of your members want to get their news out there. But how can they do that? The answer is simple: submit press releases to local newspapers!

The most important part of your press release is your headline.

The most important part of your press release is the headline. It should be short and to the point, with at least one or two powerful keywords in it. If you can’t think of any good ones on the spot, don’t worry! Just keep trying until you find something that works for your story.

You also want to use boldface when writing headlines so they stand out from other text on the page (and make it easier for people who aren't fluent in English).

Make sure you have a good angle for your release.

A good angle is one that will attract the reader's attention. It should be relevant to them and newsworthy, as well as timely and focused on a single subject.

It should be unique in some way or another—not just another story about something else happening in town at the same time (for example).

The reporter writing for your local newspaper may have similar stories to write about every day, so try coming up with something new!

Write your press release in the third person.

The third person is a style of writing that allows you to keep your message focused. It’s also a good way to avoid giving the impression that you are trying too hard because it allows the reader to focus on your message instead of getting distracted by who wrote it.

When writing in first person, for example, “I am a writer and I want my story published in The New York Times Magazine,” readers may think that you are bragging about yourself or trying too hard. By using third person, however, we can assure readers that this message is not coming from someone else but rather from an expert who has been successful in their field by sharing his or her experiences with them (and hopefully getting some attention along the way).
